VISTA Benefits

This week’s tip is on VISTA benefits. It is important that you, your site supervisors, and your members are aware of their benefits not only to make your VISTAs’ lives easier, but also so you know what they are legally entitled to and what you have to provide as a sponsor. A lot of information on benefits can be found here: https://www.vistacampus.gov/in-service/benefits-service. Here are some highlights.

Apart from their biweekly living allowance, members also choose between an education award and a cash stipend, which they receive upon successful completion of service.

They can receive certain health benefits and may be eligible for childcare assistance. If members are relocating more than 50 miles to serve, they can receive a relocation allowance of $750 and travel allowance to move and then move back at the end of the year.

If members are driving or taking public transportation to different service sites during the day, they’re entitled to reimbursement.

Members are allowed certain amounts of leave time, such as 10 days personal leave and 10 days medical leave.

Once they’ve successfully completed service, they will receive one year of non-competitive eligibility for employment in the federal government.

If you or a member have a specific question on a benefit, don’t hesitate to reach out to your Program Officer.
